Job Opening: Hierarchical Learning Applied to Object Recognition

The Vision Lab at the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, CA, is involved with several funded projects aimed at improving object detection and recognition, human activity analysis, and gesture recognition for human-computer interaction. We are seeking a talented and energetic computer scientist or electrical engineer to join our growing team of students, programmers, and faculty members.

MOVES Research Summit 2009

You will contribute to this research and help us investigate the hypothesis that object recognition tasks can be decomposed into multi-layer problems, that is, recognizing progressively more complex “objects” from lower-level “features.” Your focus may lie with analyzing the vector spaces spanned by these features, be they simple features like gradients or rather complex features such as SIFT. Or you may investigate the structural composition of features into objects by devising models and applying machine learning techniques, possibly for a multi-level recognition method. Ideally, your research will shed light on both of these aspects and devise features that are well suited to structural composition into objects.

Your work will be applicable to a wide range of computer vision tasks, with applications to image database indexing and retrieval, forensics, real-time surveillance, robotic navigation, augmented reality – you name it. We strive to conduct relevant research and place high value in publications and experimentation. The lab owns or has access to a multitude of sensors, including still and video cameras, panoramic and stereo cameras, infrared imagers, sonar sensors, and LiDAR sensors.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will combine solid mathematical and algorithmic foundations with hands-on experience with machine learning and image analysis. Good communication and teamwork skills are a must. Familiarity with Matlab, with a programming environment such as MS Visual Studio, and with embedded hardware systems are a plus. We can accommodate candidates with degrees from Bachelor’s to PhD, and with experience levels from junior to senior. The candidate’s degree must be in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a comparable field. Several fellowship programs are available to PhD candidates.

BASE-IT team 2009

Occasional travel to field sites to support data collection may be required. This is a full-time, on-site position that does not require secret clearance. As a neat perk, you may take graduate courses at no charge while employed at NPS.

This position is open to US citizens, permanent residents, and most foreign nationals in possession of a working visa. NPS cannot sponsor immigrant visas. The Naval Postgraduate School is an Equal Opportunity Employer.

The position is for FY 2011 (which will begin in October, 2010) with possibility for renewal based on funding. To inquire or apply for this position, please send your resume and cover letter to Asst. Prof. Kölsch.

Research and Graduate School Opportunities

Below is a brief, generic list of funding opportunities in various areas for Masters or PhDs, and for funding resources for PostDoc positions. Applications to any one of these grants are much stronger if you have a relationship with your lab and future workplace already. In addition to these opportunities, NPS has educational and research relations with the University of California at Santa Barbara (UCSB) and the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), and collaborative projects are always welcome.
