NPS Vision Lab

The NPS Vision Lab is a research and education lab in the MOVES Institute and the Computer Science Department at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA. Our expertise is at the crossroads of computer vision, computer graphics and human-computer interaction. We collaborate with NPS-wide efforts on training systems, robotics and autonomous systems, sensor networks and embedded systems. We strive to accomplish projects with educational goals while incorporating and advancing current research into prototype systems.

Feb 25, 2011: The video to our CACM article is now available on SciVee. You can also browse SciVee by Channel and select the Communications of the ACM channel.

Jan 28, 2011: Juan P. Wachs, former PostDoc in the NPS Vision Lab, Mathias Kölsch and two collaborators published an article on "Vision-Based Hand Gesture Applications" which is featured on the Communications of the ACM homepage, along with a short video: http://cacm.acm.org/

Nov 9, 2010: Vision Lab member and NPS dual-major student LT Rob Zaborowski has been awarded the competitive SPAWAR Student Fellowship! This will enable and support his thesis work on embedded object detection from UAVs. Congratulations! See the NPS Research Newsletter (page 8) for more information.

Oct 15, 2010: A new HandVu version is available! Built with OpenCV 2.1, tested on XP and Vista, and permitting custom posture detectors. The Mac OSX version is in the final steps of packaging.

Aug 28, 2010: Our paper on "Vision-based Hand Gesture Interfaces: Challenges and Innovations" has been accepted as the cover feature on the February 2011 issue of the Communications of the ACM! Congratulations, Juan et al! We are in the process of creating a video to accompany the paper.

Aug 20, 2010: The lab took a trip to Camp Roberts to conduct experiments with unmanned aerial vehicles, or the imagery obtained from those, to be precise. Check out the Camp Roberts article on the Research page.

June 10, 2009: MOVES Director CDR Joe Sullivan gave an interview for the Experiential eLearning blog, talking about some of the technologies developed here in the NPS Vision Lab.

May 2, 2009: The Velodyne LIDAR that was purchased by the NPS Physics Dept. and the MOVES Institute in a joint effort has enjoyed plenty of attention. We mounted it on a truck and drove it through urban areas. Here are a few images:
